All hail Chief Justice Puno!
He noted that the environmental problems in the Philippines are among the most serious in the whole world. "That is why we are on the watch list of countries nearing environmental collapse," he said.
Then again...
"The protection of the environment is high [on] the priority list of the entire government."
"The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) headed by Secretary Jose “Lito” Atienza has redoubled efforts to enforce environmental laws."
Really now?

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines -- The protection of the environment remains high on the priority of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Reynato Puno said on Thursday.
Puno, who was in Bacolod to speak at a gathering of Masons, said the Supreme Court has created and strengthened "green benches."
The conglomeration of the country's environmental problems has resulted in what scientist claim is the coming of an environmental collapse in the Philippines , Puno said.
"That is why the protection of the environment is high [on] the priority list of the entire government, including the judiciary," he said.
In response to this priority, Puno said the high tribunal has organized special courts to handle environment cases.
"Special holistic training for our judges manning green benches, in collaboration with prosecutors, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the different NGOs (non-government organizations) that advocate the protection of the environment is being undertaken," he said.
The Philippine Judicial Academy, in collaboration with foreign funding agencies, has undertaken a continuing training program on the environment, Puno said.
"Some environment cases are quite complicated and needs special expertise of the judges, prosecutors and lawyers," he explained.
Puno also noted that the environmental problems in the Philippines are among the most serious in the whole world.
"That is why we are on the watch list of countries nearing environmental collapse," he said.
But Puno also noted that, aside from the judiciary, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) headed by Secretary Jose “Lito” Atienza has redoubled efforts to enforce environmental laws.
